The coat of arms Finland 2.1.1985

1,50 mk light blue definitive stamps model m75. Designed by Pirkko Vahtero. Issued on 02.01.1985. The coat of arms of Finland is a crowned lion on a red field, the right forepaw replaced with an armoured hand brandishing a sword, trampling on a saber with the hind paws. The coat of arms was originally created around the year 1580.
The lion in Nordic heraldry is quite common in Western Europe, and several European countries incorporate it into their national coats of arms. In Nordic heraldry, the lion is first-found in the coat of arms of Denmark in the later part of the 12th century. Starting in the 12th century, the territory of today's Finland was gradually incorporated into the Swedish kingdom, and this coincided with the period when coats of arms first came into use in northern Europe. The first known use of the lion in Sweden was on the royal seals of Erik Knutsson (died 1216) and Erik Eriksson (1216–50), who used two and three lions on their seal, respectively. The first king of the Folkunga family, Valdemar Birgersson (1239–1302), also used 3 lions on his seal (Figure 2).
Finland as a duchy. Bengt Birgersson, the first Duke of Finland (1254–91, Duke from 1284 until 1291), and Valdemar Magnusson, the second Duke (died 1318, Duke of Finland from 1302 until 1317), both used the later Folkunga coat of arms, which was a crowned lion rampant with three bends sinister, the main difference being that Valdemar's arms had the field strewn with hearts. This version of the arms was quite similar to the modern coat of arms of Finland, but the lion did not yet brandish any weapon. My Dear friend Pia gave me this FDC.

Miss Universe 12.5.2000

Miss Universe 2000, the 49th Miss Universe pageant was held at Eleftheria Stadium, Nicosia, Cyprus on May 12, 2000. 79 delegates from around the universe competed for the crown. At the conclusion of the final night, Lara Dutta of India, aged 22, was crowned as the new Miss Universe 2000 by Miss Universe 1999, Mpule Kwelagobe of Botswana. Being the mythological birthplace of Aphrodite (featured on the stamp), the Greek goddess of beauty, and alluding to the Judgement of Paris, the organizers presented a golden apple as a prize to the pageant's winner.
The final competition at the Eleftheria Stadium featured a stage set reproducing the ancient Curium Amphitheatre. It was hosted by American comic Sinbad, with entertainment by Elvis Crespo, Montell Jordan, saxophonist David Koz and Cypriot international star Anna Vissi. The event was held at daybreak in Cyprus so that it could be televised live during the prime-time viewing period in the United States.
The pageant was marked by certain political issues relating to the contestants. Turkey did not send a delegate to the pageant for the first time in thirteen years because of its relations with Cyprus; the Lebanese and Israeli delegates refused to speak to each other; and Corrinne Crewe of Zimbabwe had to deal with the threat of escalating violence in her country. There were also protests from religious and feminist groups on the island who claimed the event was un-Christian and an affront to women. The three finalists, Miss India, Miss Venezuela, and Miss Spain, were asked to respond to these protests and convince people that beauty pageants were good. Lara Dutta of India, aged 22, the winner of the competition, responded by saying she believed beauty pageants were a platform for women to voice their opinions and help them enter the field they wanted to enter, be it entrepreneurship, the armed forces, politics, and so forth. She also said beauty pageants made women the strong, independent individuals they are today because of all the help they give women. This spectacular answer to a difficult question completely impressed the judges and entire audience, showing Lara was not only gorgeous but a highly intellectual individual as well. This answer is believed to have greatly contributed to her victory.
That same year, two other Miss India contestants, Priyanka Chopra and Dia Mirza, won the Miss World 2000 and Miss Asia Pacific 2000 titles respectively. This was the second time a country had won all three major international beauty pageants in the same year, the first being Australia in 1972. This delightful  miniature sheet was given to me by dear friend Merja.

Finnish Christmas stamps 7.11.2011

Finnish Christmas stamps published on November 7th 2011. Elves wish you a cozy but busy Christmas. Elves designed by the renowned postcard artist Kaarina Toivanen are the theme of this year's Christmas stamps. The Soft Christmas stamp, valued at EUR 0.55, has a smiling boy elf surrounded by balls of wool and stuffed toys. On a 2nd class stamp called Active Christmas a lively girl elf is swinging on a straw mobile.
"Rosehip" and "Light in the window" – Frozen Rose Hip. Rose hip is the ripe reddish-orange fruit of the rose. Best rose hips are gained from the Japanese rose (Rosa rugosa), which is widely grown in central Europe. Flesh of the hip is used to make jellies, jams and purees, preserves, syrups, fruit soups, tea, wine, and health drinks. Rose hips are highly rich in vitamin C (about 800 mg/100 g in fresh hips) and even when dried, they preserve this vitamin better than any other plant. The amount of vitamin C varies according to the species of roses, being in some fresh rose-hips as high as 1250 mg/100 g. Besides vitamin C, rose-hips are also rich in carotenoids (eg beta-carotene), lycopene, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin E and fibre. Some of them also contain an anti-inflammatory galactolipid, which has been shown to be effective in alleviating pain in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Two frosty rosehips have kept their red colour in the winter. The stamp is in harmony, but bold and beautiful, but cool – definitely fascinating! For winter greetings two stamps, published at the same time with the Christmas stamps, are perfect for winter greetings after the Christmas season. A new 2nd class personalized stamp frame will be published in November, and Posti's personalized stamp based on it. The theme of the stamp is a frosty rosehip. Christmas greetings abroad are well accompanied by the 1st class Light in the window stamp designed by Aino-Maija Metsola and Georgi Eremenko. On Christmas Eve, it is a common practice for Christians to place a large candle in the window of their home. The candle symbolizes the star of Bethlehem, which led the three Wise Men to the birthplace of Jesus Christ. When the candle is lit it also symbolizes Jesus as the "Light of the World". Ella gave these three lovely FDCs to me.

Christmas stamp 30.11.1984

The name Joulupukki means 'Yule Buck'. Joulupukki first came about as an evil, goat-like creature. He didn't give gifts to the children and he demanded their good behavior. He used to frighten people. In December, the pagan people had big festivals to ward off the Joulupukki. For some unknown reason, this evil creature transformed into a much kinder, gentler character which closely resembles the American Santa Claus. He is probably a combination of many old folk customs and beliefs from around the world. While most gift givers around the world deliver their presents in the middle of the night, while everyone is sleeping, the kids in Finland get to see Joulupukki in the act of delivering the presents, and that to, through the front door, and not through the chimney, as old Santa is won’t to do.
My dear friend Pia gave me this First Day Cover with the lovely stamp featuring Santa and a brownie, which was designed by Pirkko Vahtero and issued on 30.11.1984.

The Struve Geodetic Arc

The Struve Geodetic Arc is a chain of survey triangulations stretching from the Black Sea to Norway’ northern coast on the initiative of Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve (1793-1864) for the measurement of the shape and size of the planet Earth. The measurement of the arc is an exceptional example of different countries scientists’ and monarchs’ cooperation with a scientific aim. The length of the arc is 2,820 km. When the arc was created and more than a century later it was the longest measured meridian arc. It passes through the territory of today’s Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine. The original arc consisted of 258 main triangles and 265 main station points. Thirty-four of the original station points today survive, and three of them are situated in Estonia, one in the Tartu Observatory and two in Simuna in the West-Viru County. Since 2005 the Struve Geodetic Arc is a UNESCO world heritage site.

These two miniature sheets were issued on 6.5.2011 by Sweden and Estonia to mark the anniversary of this remarkable scientific feat. For more information on this please read my post dated 27th May 2011 under the sub head “Science & Technology”.

10th Anniversary of Malaysia

Malaysia was founded in 1963. These three stamps on the cover displayed were issued to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the foundation Day, namely on 31 August 1973
The cover displays the flag of Malaysia, surroundd by the standards of the 13 States. A little bit about the Federation that is Malaysia may be of interest. Malaysia is a federation of 13 states and three federal territories. These are divided between two regions, with 11 states and two federal territories on Peninsular Malaysia and the other two states and one federal territory in East Malaysia. Governance of the states is divided between the federal and the state governments, and the Federal government has direct administration of the federal territories. The 13 states are  based on historical Malay Kingdoms, and 9 of the 11 peninsular states, known as the Malay states, retain their royal families. The King is elected by and from the nine rulers to serve a five-year term. Each state has a unicameral legislature known as the State Legislative Assembly. The states of East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) have separate immigration policies and controls, and a unique residency status. For citizens of one of these states or Peninsular Malaysia, the other areas of Malaysia are considered foreign countries under immigration laws.
Each state is further divided into districts, which are then divided into mukim. In Sabah and Sarawak districts are grouped into divisions. The federal parliament is permitted to legislate on issues of land, the Islamic religion and local government, in order to provide for a uniform law among all states. It may also intervene at the request of the state assembly concerned. Except for some land related laws, the state assembly must also pass the in question. Non-Islamic issues that fall under the purview of the state may also be legislated at the federal level for the purpose of conforming to Malaysian treaty obligations. This FDC was given to me by my dear friend Maria.

4th International Congress of Cypriot Studies - Miniature Sheet 4.4.2008

The institution of Cyprological Congresses was founded in 1969 by the Society of Cypriot Studies. Up to now, three congresses have been organised (1st in 1969, 2nd in 1982, and 3rd in 1996). The 4th International Cyprological Congress took place in Nicosia from 29 April to 3 May 2008. The impressive meeting of a large number of researchers (about 350 people) from all continents, as well as the
quantity and quality of the announcements prove the huge scientific interest represented by Cyprus and the international recognition acquired by the Cyprological Congress as an institution. The aim of the meeting is mainly the direct exchange of specialized archaeological, historical, philological and other information about Cyprus. The Congress is divided into three sections: Ancient (prehistoric roman periods), Byzantine-Medieval (330-1571 AD) and Recent (1571 up to nowadays) and covers a wide spectrum of subjects related to Cypriology. This impressive miniature sheet is a very good representation of the history of Cypriot study through archeology. I was lucky to get this minisheet from an envelope sent to me from Cyprus by my dear friend Merja.

25th Anniv. of EFTA - European Free Trade Association 2.2.1985

The European Free Trade Association or EFTA is a free trade organisation between four European countries that operates parallel to, and is linked to, the European  Union (EU). EFTA was established on
3 May 1960 as a trade bloc-alternative for European states who were either unable to, or chose not to, join the then-European Economic Community (EEC) which has now become the EU. The Stockholm Convention, establishing EFTA, was signed on 4 January 1960 in Stockholm by seven
countries.
Today's EFTA members are Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland—the latter two being founding members. The initial Stockholm Convention was superseded by the Vaduz Convention, which provides for the liberalisation of trade among the member states.
Designer of the stamp and cover was Paavo Huovinen. The stamp was issued on 2.2.1985. This FDC was sent to me by my dear friend Pia.

A Professional Fisherman's Life at Sea

Ã…land’s post issued a stamp named A professional fisherman's life at sea’ on 21.3.2012.
Part two of the Nordic series the North by the Sea features the actual life at sea. Ã…land's contribution to the series shows professional fishermen trawling from a fishing boat. Since the dawn of time, fishing has been an important Ã…land industry.
Originally, small-scale fishing was mainly conducted for domestic consumption, but fishing for sale or exchange for principally cereals soon developed. Baltic herring long dominated fishing. In olden times, pike and trout, which were mostly fished by seine and hoop net, were the most important types of fish in addition to Baltic herring. From the Middle Ages until Sweden restricted the import of live fish in the 1950s, they were delivered by well-boats and sold primarily in Stockholm. My dear friend Ella sent me this wonderful FDC.

HockeyBird skates into the ice hockey world championship tournament's official stamp 21.3.2012

A stamp in
honour of the Ice Hockey World Cup that will be held in Helsinki and Stockholm in May 2012 was issued on 21st March. The official stamp of the ice hockey world will portray the widely noted mascot HockeyBird. The stamp and additional products are designed by the man behind the look of the mascot itself. He is, of course, Lead Artist Toni Kysenius of Rovio Entertainment, who has now fulfilled his long-time dream of designing a stamp. HockeyBird's job is to bring high-voltage bird energy to the great sporting event and to barge into anything and everything, so it is only natural that he will also take over the stamp, Toni Kysenius says.
Finland and Sweden share the hosting of the ice hockey world championship tournament in 2012 and 2013. In 2012, the main arena for the tournament is the Hartwall Areena in Helsinki, and Stockholm's Ericsson Globe Arena will have a supporting role. The 2012 tournament will be played from 4 to 20 May. My friend Ella sent this wonderful maxi card and the First Day Cover to me.

Life at Sea 21.3.2012

On 21 March a self-adhesive stamp booklet, designed by Klaus Welp, was published as an addition to the Nordic Maritime 2012 series. The theme for 2012 is Life at Sea. Stamps with a similar theme will be published at the same time in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland, and on the Ã…land Islands, Faroe Islands and Greenland. The motifs of the Finnish stamps include the Finnish Border Guard's patrol vessel Merikarhu (Merikarhu means sea bear. The Finnish word merikarhu also means an old seaman) and the Finnish Lifeboat Institution's rescue cruiser Jenny Wihuri. This very attractive cover with the equally striking minisheet of two stamps was issued by Finland on 21.3.2012, and sent to me by my friend Ella.

The Terrible Titanic Tragedy.

These two mini sheets of Stamps were issued by St Tome e Principe in April 1998, to pay tribute to those who were lost in the North Atlantic in the tragedy of RMS Titanic. They were given to me by my friend Merja.

A wonderful ship that sank on its maiden trans Atlantic voyage. Reams and reams have been written on this tragedy. So, I'll spare you from it once again. Olympic Games London 2012 21.3.2012

These two topical and nicely designed stamps and covers about The London Olympics 2012 and UEFA 2012 were issued by Cyprus on 21.3.2012, and sent to me by my friend Merja.

Cyprus post issued this set of four stamps to commemorate the 30th Summer Olympic LONDON 2012. “One day, when humanity knows how to successfully develop talent, every state/nation shall win its fair share of Olympic medals” Baron Pierre de Coubertin
The Cypriot Olympic team is preparing for the Olympic Games. They have worked hard, with devotion towards their goal. They hope to give their all, so that the unbounded Cypriot talent emerges and defies its population size, touching the top global sports. “We believe that the time has come to win our fair share”, say the team members. They believe that their athletes are ready for the greatest summer celebration and will make their small country proud. For Cyprus, faster, higher, stronger, with the Olympic team to London.

UEFA Euro 2012

The 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred to, as Euro 2012, will be the 14th European Championship for national football teams sanctioned by UEFA. The final tournament will be hosted by Poland and Ukraine between 8 June and 1 July 2012. It is the first time that either nation has hosted the tournament. This bid was chosen by UEFA's Executive Committee in 2007.
The final tournament features sixteen nations, the last European Championship to do so (from Euro 2016 onward, there will be 24 finalists). Qualification was contested by 51 nations between August 2010 and November 2011 to join the two host nations in the tournament. The winner of the tournament gains automatic entry to the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup hosted by Brazil.
This First Day Cover was issued on 21.3.2012. Some philatelists have criticized the shape of the circular stamp, the colour combination on the mini sheet. I personally think it is quite satisfactory.

Life Underwater

Malaysia post issued a set of stamps and a souvenir sheet on 23.1.2012, of underwater life featuring Leopard Moray Eel, Mandarin Fish, Blue Sea Star and Red-spotted Coral Crab.
The seas and oceans around Malaysia are home to thousands of different species that live together. The huge variety of animals that live in the underwater ecosystem is fascinating and impressive. In order to increase their chances of survival, many sea creatures developed sophisticated defence mechanism by mimicking or camouflaging, blending seamlessly into the environment. Starfish and coral can be found growing side by side in the ocean along with a large variety of other invertebrates such as molluscs, jellyfish, squid and octopus. Large schools of fish swim around in the salty seas with sea turtles, sharks, whales, dolphins, lobsters and crabs.

Coral reefs are key players in the survival of an entire ecosystem. They provide various marine animals with food, protection and shelter, which keep generations of species alive. On the other hand, marine plants such as seaweed are a source of food for many small animals and microorganisms in the seas without which, very few other forms of marine life could exist. This lovely FDC with very pretty stamps was sent to me by my friend Budin.

50th Anniversary of the First EUROPA Stamps

After the 2nd World War, leaders of Western Europe realised that their vision of a United Europe could only be achieved by peaceful means. This idea began to manifest itself in the issue of stamps with a common design that emphasized unity. France, West Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg issued the first EUROPA stamps in 1956. Since 1974 only the theme was defined thus enabling each country to present its own designs.

The miniature sheet depicts Cyprus' first four issues from 1962 (doves), 1963 (tree), 1963 (CEPT, co-operation emblem) and 1964 (flower). This lovely minisheet commemorating 50 years of the first issue was given to me by my friend Merja,

Bhutan's Victory over the Tibetans in 1644.

Drukgyel Dzong, at the upper end of the valley, built to protect against invading Tibetans, but in ruins since a fire in the 1950s. Drukgyel Dzong is situated 14 km from Paro at the end of the road. This Dzong was built in a location chosen for control of the routes to Tibet. In 1647 Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel erected the Drukgyel Dzong, just north of Taktshang, in commemoration of the victory over the Tibetans in 1644. Thus while Bhutan has many cultural associations with Tibetan cultural areas, it has not been dominated by Tibetan political influence since the 17th century. The name "Drukgyel Dzong" means "Fortress of the Victorious Drukpa". In 1951 it was destroyed by fire. Now the Dzong is closed to all visitors. There have been attempts to renovate the buildings. In the background there is the Jhomolhari mountain, which is the place and embodiment of the female mountain goddess Tsheringma, who watches over the land. The first Tibetan invasion appears to have taken place shortly after the Shabdrung's arrival in 1616. The Tibetan ruler did not want to tolerate the presence of his arch enemy immediately south of his own territory. It was not enough for the Tibetan ruler that the Shabdrung had left Tibet; the opponent had to be destroyed.
In the course of the first Tibetan invasion, the general of the attackers fell and the Tibetan troops were beaten off. The fame of the Shabdrung as superior military strategist started to spread.
In Tibet the power of the ruling Tsang collapsed in 1642. Since then the Gelugpa school, headed by the fifth Dalai Lama, reigned with the support of the Mongolians. The Gelugpas also thought that they could not afford a powerful state on their southern border. In 1644, Tibetan and Mongolian armies attacked Bhutan, but the campaign was not successful. In 1648/49 several Tibetan and Mongolian columns again attacked Bhutan at various points.
They advanced as far as Thimphu, Punakha and Paro, but were ultimately defeated. Another Tibetan invasion took place in 1657, after the Shabdrung's death, but failed to achieve anything. It was the last Tibetan attempt to conquer Bhutan.
This lovely minisheet of four stamps depicting the various scenes during the invasion by the Mongols jointly with Tibet, in which they were routed by the forces of Bhutan, was given to me by Shashi.

150 Years of Railways in Finland

VR group (Valtion Rautatiet), Finland's state railways is celebrating its 150 years on the rail. In honour of the occasion, a six-stamp booklet designed by Tarja Salonen was released. The stamps depict six trains from different periods from the steam locomotive Ukkopekka to the newest train called Allegro, which runs from Helsinki to St. Petersburg. The shape of the stamps has been cut to perspective to give them the feeling of motion. These stamps were issued on 5.3.2012. 17 March 1862 was the date when regular rail services began between Helsinki and Hämeenlinna. Safety was important in designing the railway line because there were no level crossings and initially the trains travelled in different directions on alternate days. The 1930s were the golden age for rail travel in Finland as elsewhere in Europe. The all-time record for rail passenger volumes was set in the 1940s when the population began moving from farms to factories and commuting distances became longer.

After the war Finland started to modernize its rolling stock and diesel locomotives were introduced. Living conditions in Finland gradually improved and people started travelling again. The railways marketed round trips for holidaymakers. The urban line between Tikkurila and Kerava was completed in August 2004. In autumn 2006 the Kerava-Lahti direct line took the entire VR Group into a new railway age. Ella sent me this lovely FDC and maxicard shown alongside, which depicts the Helsinki Central Railway Station.

Spring blossoms 5.3.2012

This First Day Cover with the minisheet of Spring flower stamps was issued by Finland on 5.3.2012. Spring flowers are shown in a retro-styled six-stamp miniature booklet that depicts liverwort, spring pea, least gagea, lung-wort, marsh marigold and spring corydalis. Klaus Welp designed the Spring Blossoms miniature booklet, and he also took the photographs for it. My friend Ella sent me this lovely FDC and the minisheet. This sheet of six plant stamps is like a little herbario: liverwort, spring pea, least gagea, lung-wort, marsh marigold, and spring corydalis. The nostalgic feelings come from the yellow toned paper and the old fashioned Latin names. The plants were selected for the miniature booklet according to their visual and scientific values.
I am given to understand that decades ago school children in Finland had to collect upto 40 specimens of flowers and plants during the three months summer holidays. After collecting them, these flowers and plants were pressed and dried. Then they were fastened on a paper with a special tape. Children had to learn the Latin names of these plants and flowers too. When summer was over and they returned to school, teachers wanted to see their herbarios. An exam had to be passed as well! Gosh!

1958 – Pandit Nehru in Bhutan

Diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan were established in 1968 with the appointment of a resident representative of India in Thimphu. Before this our relations with Bhutan were looked after by our Political Officer in Sikkim. The basic framework of India – Bhutan bilateral relations is the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation of 1949 between the two countries, which was updated and signed during the visit to India of His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck in February 2007.
The visit to Bhutan by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru of India became an epoch making event in the relations between the two countries. In his address to the Bhutanese public in Paro on 23 September, 1958, Prime Minister Nehru ruled out any pressure on Bhutan which might impair its independent status. He said: “Some may think that since India is a great and powerful country and Bhutan a small one, the former might wish to exercise pressure on Bhutan. It is therefore, essential that I make it clear to you that our only wish is that you should remain an independent country, choosing your own way of life and taking the path of progress according to your will.”

The Nehru visit reiterated the independent status of Bhutan and marked the first step towards planned economic development in Bhutan. This historical minisheet of stampds was given to me by Shashi.
