Airmail Service between Vatican City and Częstochowa 2.6.1979
Częstochowa is a city in southern Poland on the Warta River with 240,027 inhabitants as of June 2009. It has been situated in the Silesian Voivodeship (administrative division) since 1999, and was previously the capital of the Częstochowa Voivodeship (1975–1998). However, Częstochowa is historically part of Lesser Poland, not of Silesia, and before 1795 (see: Partitions of Poland), it belonged to the Kraków Voivodeship. Częstochowa is located in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. It is the 13th most populous city in Poland. It is the largest economic, cultural and administrative hub in the northern part of the Silesian Voivodeship.
The city is known for the famous Pauline monastery of Jasna Góra, which is the home of the Black Madonna painting, a shrine to the Virgin Mary.
In modern times, Pope John Paul II, a native son of Poland, prayed before the Madonna during his historic visit in 1979, several months after his election to the Chair of Peter. The Pope made another visit to Our Lady of Częstochowa in 1983 and again in 1987, 1991, 1997 and 1999. On August 15, 1991, John Paul II was named Honorary Citizen of Częstochowa. On May 26, 2006, the city was visited by Pope Benedict XVI.

50th anniversary of the United States Airmail Service 15.5.68
1968 10¢ Curtiss Jenny stamp marks the 50th anniversary of the United States Airmail Service, which was born on May 15, 1918, when two 90-horsepower Curtiss Jenny airplanes departed from New York and Washington. During the first year of service, 1,208 flights were flown. Fifty-three were forced down by bad weather and thirty-seven by engine trouble. But the overall completion record was better than 92%.
Thank you Merja.

100th Anniversary of the first official airmail post in Germany 13.9.2012
The special stamp on this First Day Cover issued in Berlin on 13.9.2012 was to commemorate “Stamp Day”. Every year Deutche Post celebrates the "Day of the Stamp" with a special stamp. In 2012 the stamp issued was dedicated to the 100th Anniversary of the first official airmail post in Germany.
The premiere of the official "Air Mail" was on May 19, 1912 commemorating the "Mannheimer flight day" celebrations. After the show pilots of the special flight went with their aircraft on an overland flight to Heidelberg, and two of them from Heidelberg landed on the racetrack.
On these flights between Mannheim and Heidelberg and back, post was delivered by the German Reich Post for the first time officially. There was an "official airmail card" for 20 Pfg that was only sent when it had been handed to the flight crew, or posted in the city in a special mailbox. The card bore the special "Airmail Mannheim-Heidelberg 05/19/12 * 2-3 * N".
Thank you Marco for this interesting FDC.
