Paphos - World Cultural Heritage 5.7.1982

Paphos has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. It was a centre of the cult of Aphrodite and of pre-Hellenic fertility deities. Aphrodite's legendary birthplace was on this island, where her temple was erected by the Myceneans in the 12th century B.C. The remains of villas, palaces, theatres, fortresses and tombs mean that the site is of exceptional architectural and historic value. The mosaics of Nea Paphos are among the most beautiful in the world.

World Heritage stamps from Paphos.

(50) Mosaic: Christ Monogram.
(125) Sculpture: King of Palaepaphos.
(225) Fragment of mosaic: Theseus fights the Minotaur.

Paphos is a small charming harbour town, on the west of the island, which has been, during certain times in antiquity, the capital of Cyprus, and has a history which goes back literally thousands of years, and has always attracted visitors from the rest of the island and abroad.
From the modern town centre to the picturesque harbour and, stretching across the coastline, lie innumerable ancient sites. Paphos is the birthplace and centre of worship of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love and Beauty and the whole area retains some of this magic.
Bordered by a lovely coastline, the Paphos area has charming villages in its mountains, here life has gone unchanged over the years, where the customs and traditions of the country have been kept alive because that is how it has always been. In the heartland are famous monasteries such as Ayios Neophytos and Chrysoroyiatissa, attracting many pilgrims.

Thank you Merja.

100th Anniversary of Society of Swedish Literature in Finland 5.2.1985

The Society of Swedish Literature in Finland is a scholarly organisation that preserves, develops and mediates the Swedish cultural heritage in Finland.
The Society is a versatile and future-oriented cultural institution of Finland-Swedish literature, culture and research. The meaning of the word ‘literature' is to be understood in a broad context. The traditional meaning of ‘learned studies' includes, among others, literature (both fiction and non-fiction), research, the mediation of oral and written traditions, as well as philology and linguistics.
The geographic area of activity covers all Swedish-speaking regions of Finland. The aims of the Society are realised through the archives and the library, the publishing unit, the research unit, the distribution of scholarships and the financial administration. The activities are made possible through sound financial backing.
The Society of Swedish Literature is one of the large managers of public funds in Finland. The Society owns and administers the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland. The activities of the Society are founded mainly by private donations. The stamp depicts Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804-1877), writer of Finland's national anthem. Our Land.
The FDC and the stamp were issued on 05.02.1985. The Designer of this issue was Eeva Oivo. This FDC was given to me by my friend Pia.
