UEFA Euro 2012

The 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, commonly referred to, as Euro 2012, will be the 14th European Championship for national football teams sanctioned by UEFA. The final tournament will be hosted by Poland and Ukraine between 8 June and 1 July 2012. It is the first time that either nation has hosted the tournament. This bid was chosen by UEFA's Executive Committee in 2007.
The final tournament features sixteen nations, the last European Championship to do so (from Euro 2016 onward, there will be 24 finalists). Qualification was contested by 51 nations between August 2010 and November 2011 to join the two host nations in the tournament. The winner of the tournament gains automatic entry to the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup hosted by Brazil.
This First Day Cover was issued on 21.3.2012. Some philatelists have criticized the shape of the circular stamp, the colour combination on the mini sheet. I personally think it is quite satisfactory.

50th Anniversary of the Cyprus Football Association 15.10.1984

The C.F.A. or The Cyprus Football Association as it is commonly known, was established in 1934 by the clubs Anorthosis, E.P.A., A.E.L., Aris, A.P.O.E.L., Olympiakos, Turkish Club and TRAST, and its aim was to promote sport ideals and particularly football. The C.F.A. organizes all the national football championships - for all divisions - in Cyprus and closely cooperates with the various international Associations F.I.F.A. (since 1948) and U.E.F.A. (since 1982). In 1984, forty-two clubs are members of the C.F.A. This cover and the stamp on it commemorates the 50th Year of the CFA. Merja gave me this FDC.

FIFA World Cup 2010

The 2010 FIFA World Cup was the 19th World Cup, the world championship for men’s national association football teams. It took place in South Africa from 11 June to 11 July 2010. The bidding process for hosting the tournament finals was open only to African nations; in 2004, the international football federation, FIFA, selected South Africa over Egypt and Moroccoto become the first African nation to host the finals.
The matches were played in ten stadiums in nine host cities around the country, with the final played at the Soccer Citystadium in South Africa's largest city, Johannesburg. Thirty-two teams were selected for participation via a worldwide qualification tournament that began in August 2007. In the first round of the tournament finals, the teams competed in round-robin groups of four teams for points, with the top two teams in each group proceeding. These sixteen teams advanced to theknockout stage, where three rounds of play decided which teams would participate in the final.
In the final, Spain, the European champions, defeated third-time finalists the Netherlands 1–0 after extra time, with Andrés Iniesta's goal in the 116th minute giving Spain their first world title, the first time that a European nation has won the tournament outside its home continent. Host nation South Africa, 2006 world champions Italy and 2006 runners-up France were all eliminated in the first round of the tournament. It was the first time that the hosts were eliminated in the first round. This fine cover was given to me by Merja.

The Evening Standard 1996 UEFA European Football Championship (Euro 96)

The FDC displayed, is a Football souvenir cover with Wembly/Evening Standard cancellation. The 1996 UEFA European Football Championship (Euro 96) was hosted by England, who won the right to host the tournament ahead of bids from Austria, Portugal and the Netherlands. It was the tenth European Football Championship, which is held every four years and endorsed by UEFA. It was the first to use the "Euro" name, and the first where 16 nations competed. The tournament's final stages took place between 8 and 30 June 1996. The slogan of the tournament was "Football Comes Home", as England is where the rules of the game were first standardised. English football and popular culture has since referenced the competition fondly, even though the home team did not reach the final. The five footballers appearing on these stamps have been chosen by the general public through a national poll organised by the Royal Mail, the result of which will be made public in February 1996, and were :-
- 19p stamp: Dixie Dean -
- 25p stamp: Bobby Moore -
- 35p stamp: Duncan Edwards -
- 41p stamp: Billy Wright -
- 60p stamp: Danny Blanchflower -

Malaysia – Suzuki Cup 2010

The 2010 AFF Cup, sponsored by Suzuki and officially named the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup, took place on December 1–29, 2010. Indonesia and Vietnam hosted the preliminary stage from 1 to 7 December for Group A and 2 to 8 December for Group B. The semi-finals were played home and away with the first legs on 15 and 16 December 2010, and the second legs on 18 and 19 December 2010. The final was played over two legs on 26 December 2010 and 29 December 2010. Indonesia appeared in their fourth final while the Philippines qualified for the semi-finals for the first time under the management of Simon McMenemy. Malaysia subsequently won their first ever title since they first appeared in the final in the inaugural edition, beating Indonesia 4-2 on aggregate in the finals. Malaysia became the first nation to win the AFF Cup (including tournaments held under earlier formats), despite losing two games in the tournament (both to Indonesia). This nice FDC with the lovely commemorative stamps was sent to me by Budin.
