Growing Pineapples in Ciskei 20.8.1982

The Pineapple, ananas comosus, was introduced in Southern Africa from Java in about 1660. It is a delicious fruit with a distinctive flavour and a decorative appearance. The cultivation of the plant requires a sub-tropical climate, well-drained sub-soil, regular fertilising and efficient weed control. The Peddie area is Ciskei’s most important pineapple producing region. The postmark is very appropriately from Peddie. The four stamps on the FDC depict various stages in the commercial production of pineapples in Ciskei. They are as follows :-
8c stampSpraying of the pineapple fields. Mobile boom sprayers were used for the application of herbicides, fungicides and insecticides, as well as fertilisers and growth regulators.
15c stamp. Harvesting. The pineapple fruit consists of more than 100 small coalescent berry like fruit on a central axis. It is cone shaped and owes its name to its superficial resemblance to a pine-cone.
20c stamp. Despatch to Cannery. Pineapple production in Ciskei is mainly concentrated on the large, juicy Cayenne variety, which were then sent to the canneries and juice factories in the Eastern Cape.
30c stamp. Packing. Pineapples are packed in cartons for the local fresh fruit market. They are much in demand for their flavour, as well for the valuable vitamins, minerals and fruit-sugar they contain.

The Olive tree and its products 30.1.2014

A new commemorative stamp issue “The Olive tree and its products” was released by Cyprus Post on 30 January 2014. The issue comprises two stamps of the value of € 0, 34 and € 0, 51(se-tenant).
Cyprus has a long history of producing oil products. Olive trees have grown on the island since at least the Neolithic period (sixth millennium B.C.) and have been cultivated since the second millennium B.C.
Ancient oil presses for the production of olive oil dating back to the end of the 13th     century B.C. have been discovered on Cyprus.
The Olive Tree and Its Products issue includes three stamps: a €0.34 denomination picturing an olive tree in the foreground and rolling hills covered with more trees in the background; and a pair of se-tenant €0.51 stamps showing ripe olives and a bottle of olive oil. Marianna Iacovou designed the stamps.

Royal Agricultural Society of Natal 28.5.1976

In May 1851 the Natal and East African Society was launched, later shortened to the Natal Society, with a mission "to tell the truth" about conditions in the colonies. At the time thousands of British settlers were being lured to Africa by inflated promises of the good life to be had overseas, only to encounter hardship and struggle.
In 1851 the Society also organized the first in a series of annual agricultural shows and the Agricultural Society was born, becoming the Royal Agricultural Society in 1905.
This FDC was issued to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Royal Agricultural Society of Natal.  The stamp featuring the President of the Society was issued at Pietermaritzburg on 26.5.1976.

Thank you Maria.

Future Farmers of America - 25th Anniversary 1953

The stamp on this cover commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Future Farmers of America. The stamp pictures a future farmer, wearing a jacket with the organization’s emblem, standing before a farm with rolling hills in the distance.

And who are these Future Farmers of America? In 1928, 33 farm boys met in a Kansas City hotel to discuss the future of farming in America. Known as the Future Farmers of America, the organization they founded provided support for agricultural education and leadership training for high school students.

After granting charters in 48 states across the U.S., the National FFA Foundation was established in 1944. Four years later, the FFA participated in an international exchange program with the Young Farmers Club of Great Britain. Today, the FFA sends more than 350 students to 25 countries annually to share knowledge and promote agricultural careers.
