Anniversaries and Events 27.10.1983

(15c) 35th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The safekeeping of those rights derived from that same human nature has always been a high ideal nearly always unattainable. The actual acceptance of these human rights by everybody is even today both a vision and a demand. For this reason the General Assembly of the U.N. proclaimed in 1948 the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Cyprus, a victim of violation of Human Rights supports substantially and consistently their full implementation. The 15c depicts the emblem of the 35th Anniversary with the map of Europe in the background.

(25c) 70th Birth Anniversary of Archbishop Makarios III. Archbishop Makarios (1913-1977) is the most important figure of modern Cypriot history, not only because of his long lasted role as a leader but also because he put the seal of his vigorous personality on every aspect of Cypriot life. His multi-role as Archbishop, Ethnarch and President of the Republic of Cyprus offered him a prominent place in Cyprus while his struggles on international grounds offered him both universal eminence and recognition. The 25c stamp depicts him in a very typical pose.

Thank you Merja.
