The Royal Wedding 28.9.1981

The wedding of Prince Charles, Heir to the British Throne, to Lady Diana Spencer on 29th July 1981 in London, has been an important event for the British who have always shown deep respect for the royal institution of their country. Prince Charles, first-born son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born in 1948 and in 1958 the Queen conferred on him the title of Prince of Wales. This along with other titles bore by the Heir to the British Throne is traced back to 1301 when it was conferred for the first time on the future King Edward II. Lady Diana Spencer was born in 1961. She is a descendant of one of Britain's oldest title families and shares a common ancestor with Prince Charles being descended from King James I who reigned round 1600. Many stamps have been released in Britain, the British Commonwealth and other countries to celebrate the Royal wedding of Charles to Diana.

To celebrate this event Cyprus has released in the series "anniversaries and events 1981" this stamp which depicts H.R.H. Prince Charles and Lady Diana with St. Paul's Cathedral in the background.
