Paphos - World Cultural Heritage 5.7.1982

Paphos has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. It was a centre of the cult of Aphrodite and of pre-Hellenic fertility deities. Aphrodite's legendary birthplace was on this island, where her temple was erected by the Myceneans in the 12th century B.C. The remains of villas, palaces, theatres, fortresses and tombs mean that the site is of exceptional architectural and historic value. The mosaics of Nea Paphos are among the most beautiful in the world.

World Heritage stamps from Paphos.

(50) Mosaic: Christ Monogram.
(125) Sculpture: King of Palaepaphos.
(225) Fragment of mosaic: Theseus fights the Minotaur.

Paphos is a small charming harbour town, on the west of the island, which has been, during certain times in antiquity, the capital of Cyprus, and has a history which goes back literally thousands of years, and has always attracted visitors from the rest of the island and abroad.
From the modern town centre to the picturesque harbour and, stretching across the coastline, lie innumerable ancient sites. Paphos is the birthplace and centre of worship of Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love and Beauty and the whole area retains some of this magic.
Bordered by a lovely coastline, the Paphos area has charming villages in its mountains, here life has gone unchanged over the years, where the customs and traditions of the country have been kept alive because that is how it has always been. In the heartland are famous monasteries such as Ayios Neophytos and Chrysoroyiatissa, attracting many pilgrims.

Thank you Merja.
