40th Anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 10.12.1988

The Postal Administration of Cyprus issued a commemorative stamp on the occasion of the 40th Anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on the 10th December, 1948.
Cyprus celebrates Human Rights Day on the 10th of December every year; the issue of the commemorative stamp is but one of the many events and activities which are organized for this year.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is one of the most important milestones in the course of the internationalisation of human rights. It is a document of great political significance and powerful weapon in the hands of the people, groups and individuals for the exertion of pressure for the implementation of its provisions.
As envisaged by the United Nations, the Declaration was followed by two covenants,"The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights", and the "International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights", where the rights of the Declaration were cast in the form of legal obligations.
Cyprus ratified the two Covenants in February 1969 and will continue to adhere to the principles of the Declaration and to respect the rights of the individual without any discrimination whatsoever.
