Health Stamps 4.10.1954

Several requests were received for subjects to depict on the 1954 Health stamp issue - Centenary of the YMCA, Girls Life Brigade and the conquest of Everest, in which a New Zealander had played such a conspicuous part.

Eight artists submitted 18 designs and a submission by James Berry depicting a young tramper was selected for inclusion on the stamps. The proceeds of the 'Health' value of these Health stamps was donated to the Children's Health Camps movement.
Violet Version - 1 1/2d + 1/2d
A young tramper with map in hand, is depicted gazing earnestly across the lake with a snow clad Mount Aspiring rising in the distant background.
A view of the summit of Mt Everest is included in the top left-hand corner. The design symbolizes the thoughts and aspirations of many New Zealanders, at the same time paying tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary's conquest of Mount Everest the previous year.

Thank you Merja.
