To commemorate the opening of the 1964 New York World’s Fair, this blue and green 5¢ stamp on this cover was issued on 22.4.1964. The stamp pictures the fair’s main mall, including the Unisphere (a 12-story stainless-steel model of the earth).
This was the third time that New York City was hosting a World’s Fair. World’s Fairs are international expositions that showcase commerce, industry, and science, as well as providing entertainment and cultural activities. The 1964-65 fair’s theme was “Peace Through Understanding” and was dedicated to “Man’s Achievement on a Chinking Globe in an Expanding Universe.”
The fair ran from April 22 to October 18, 1964 and April 21 to October 17, 1965. Held in Queens’ Flushing Meadows Corona Park, it was one of the largest World’s Fairs held in the U.S. at nearly one square mile. In all, more than 51 million people visited the fair, where exhibits dealing with the Space Age were one of the main attractions.
